Family History
I read on a Facebook site there was a book called MILITARY HISTORY OF PERTHSHIRE, 1899-1902,
By the
TULLIBARDINE, MARCHIONESS OF
written in 1908
Which had the name and photograph of every soldier from Perthshire who fought in the Boer War.
It was in the reference library/family History section which means you can’t take it away you have to read it there . So we went there today (Tuesday) and got it out to look for the name of my grandpa’s older brother , John, who we knew had fought there. This was the page with his name and service record number and where he fought and got injured. Sadly there was not a photo of him but there were loads of others. He served with the Black Watch.
When I took the book back to the guy on the desk I told him I had found what I was looking for and he asked some questions and he proceeded to bring up on screen John Cowper’s service record. I now know he was 5ft 8 and a quarter inches, sallow complexion, hazel eyes, dark hair with scar on his cheek. His record said he was a good soldier and he got his medal. He showed me a picture of what the medal would have looked like. Interesting.
We walked home and had lunch. S went to the gym and I had my group weights PT. Good session but was hot! It was 19.5 outside.
