Sgwarnog: In the Field

Sundew

I had a fairly slow Saturday at home, but got out for a good walk on the moor in the afternoon when it became apparent that the forecast thunderstorms weren’t going to arrive.

My route out to the far corner at Birch Close Lane took me past the one patch of Sphagnum where Round-leaved Sundew can be found. I eventually found one small clump (main image), but this was the first time in a few years that I’ve found any. The orchids are also coming out in their usual spots (extra).

In the rough pasture on the far edge of the moor the Curlew and Lapwing were defending their breeding territory against a Red Kite. There may well be chicks about now, although I didn’t see any.

It was also good to see plenty of Small Tortoiseshell butterflies about. The summer brood must have just emerged in the past day or two.
