It All Began Here
I packed up almost everything before going to bed last night. We were awake by 6:00 so we got up and finished. After breakfast, hubby took all our stuff to the van while I showered. We left the resort before the 10:00 checkout time. The rain hadn’t started so we went to Jamestown. Here are a few interesting facts I collected from the web, the brochure we were given and the film we watched. They should explain my collage. Jamestown, Va is home of the first permanent English settlement in the US. Three ships, Susan Constant, Godspeed and Discovery, carrying 104 male passengers, landed in Jamestown on 4 May 1607. They built a fort on the small island to protect themselves from the indigenous people and named John Smith as their leader. There was no fresh drinking water and little food sources. All but 60 colonists died from starvation or disease by 1609. The settlers needed an export product to sustain living there. John Rolfe decided to try raising tobacco. He was very successful and the colony grew and prospered. John married Pocahontas, daughter of Chief Powhatan and that union brought peace to the region, at least temporarily. The rest of the story can be found by reading the history of Virginia. “The tall Tercentenary Monument, which resembles the Washington Monument in Washington, was placed on Jamestown Island by the United States government in 1907 for the 300th anniversary of the settlement.” - Wikipedia. We saw bronze statues of John Smith and Pocahontas as well as the reconstructed Memorial Church in an area that is managed by Preservation Virginia. They have escavated and located thousands of artifacts from the colonial era. There is another area of Jamestown with a living museum and replicas of the ships. We were both anxious to get on the road towards town. We found a small “Mom and Pop” restaurant. Hubby got shepherd’s pie and I chose a turkey BLT wrap-only ate half. The return trip was pretty quiet. Hubby picked up a few groceries while I researched Jamestown’s history. I napped on and off. We should arrive home by 4:15. After we put everything away, I expect we will rest. Wishing you some down time. Stay safe. Thanks for visiting. "There remain not past 60 men, women, and children, most miserable and poor creatures, and those were preserved, for the most part, by roots, herbs, acorns, walnuts, berries, now and then a little fish. Yea, even the very skins of our horses." -– John Smith
