Lots of wood

Swedish homes, sheds, public buildings and cabins in the forest are traditionallly made of wood.  And mostly they're this warm shade of red, called Falun Red.

They all sit beautifully in the lush green surroundings and even occasionally have grass growing on the roof (see extra).  They'll must also look very dramatic in the winter surrounded by snow.

The origin dates from the 16th century when byproducts from the copper industry in the Falun Dalarna County were transformed into a durable pigment.  Paint made with it protected the buildings from the harsh winter.
