Another day, another meadow and more midges
Today I went on the National Park Walk into Wellbeing visit to hay meadows and more near Greenhaugh.
Caroline in my picture is seen talking to us about The Bog, a hay meadow which she owns. She remembers her grandfather cutting the meadow and how certain plants prefer to grow in different parts.
One of the interesting plants is great burnet. Her granny used to send her out with a bag to pick the flower heads. These were made into wine. Caroline says it tasted awful, but she was a child at the time......
We heard a lot about the way the land in the area has been managed over the years and lots of local history.
We were a large group of 18 women plus Nick, who was on the team and the only man (he coped well)!
The walk took a very long time as we enjoyed all there was to see. Lunch was by the river. The rain stopped and the midges exulted (even when I used repellent)!
We finished at the Hollybush Inn, a famous local pub. It changed hands this week and I think we were a bit of a shock to the system of the new landlords! We were made very welcome.
Time to dry out before tomorrow.
