Yet More Butterflies

I've been gardening today (I know!) so surrounded by bees and butterflies.

I can't make my mind up about my favourite butterfly but the common blue is up there. It's certainly one of the tiniest, and one of the prettiest.

The bright blue colour is produced by the diffraction of sunlight by thousands of corrugated scales on the wings which absorb all colours of the spectrum except blue. The wings contain no blue pigment.

That explains the blue, but what about the brown and red bits? :-)

An impressive peacock in the extras. And a gatekeeper. I think that completes the full set now, apart from a meadow brown.
