Wound up in Wexford

Fyrish monument

Fyrish monument was built at the end of the 18th Century at the behest of the local landowner, Sir Hector Munro.  It was apparently a way of creating work, so the starving labourers could be paid.  You couldn't just hand out money or food, that would "make them lazy".  And of course, "The Clearances" that created the starvation were essential!

It was quite a workout getting up there.  But the views were stupendous - I've added a couple of extras.

There are a couple of smaller follies built at the same time, but they are reputedly a bit difficult to find because they're in the woodland, and we didn't have the energy to even contemplate trying.  We just retraced our steps to the carpark.

Interestingly, Map My Walk told us we had done 3km at this point, but after we had retraced our steps to the carpark, told us we had done 5km in total - downhill was a whole kilometre shorter!

We then went for a meal at The Storehouse - very nice food.

And finished off by charging the car at Tesco whilst doing a little shopping.

Knackered tonight - bed beckons.  Moving on tomorrow.
