The Rhine Cycle Path, Day Seven:
‘K Day!’ From Koln to Koblenz to see Katja about my errant bicycle. We were at the bike shop door 2 minutes after they opened, fully expecting to pick up the freshly repaired machine and cycle on to Remagan. Unfortunately, it was not to be: first the rear wheel needed righting – everything should be good by 11.30 – then it needed replacing (not to mention the rip in the tyre) – and we were further delayed by the new wheel being stuck in traffic in a lorry somewhere. Meanwhile, we wandered around Koblenz aimlessly, grumpy as hell – the Art Gallery was closed so we found a cheap café and hung around in there for a while. It was finally ready about 3.30, so we binned off any cycling plans and caught the next train to Dusseldorf. Luckily, having basically written the day off, we then had a lovely evening in the city: a very nice meal at a fish restaurant in the Altstadt, followed by a leisurely stroll along the busy evening Rhine Promenade at sunset…
