All The Way From Mexico
At last the monarch butterflies have arrived. As with a lot of things this year, they seem to be behind schedule.
They undertake a multi-generational migration of more than a thousand miles from central Mexico to get here. Like many species now, their habitats en-route are under pressure from human activity.
Monarchs depend upon milkweed plants for survival, because, aside from being a source of nectar for food as adults, larvae will only eat milkweed.
Fortunately, the prairie here is abundant with milkweed.
This is a male, denoted by two black spots on the upper wing, which I could see on another image.
