Down memory lane...
Today I needed to make a rare visit to Meadowhall (aka Meadowhell), Sheffield's edge-of-town shopping mall. The purpose was to take some photos of a sculpture there.
Finding it led me past the Charles Clinkard children's shop, with its sale racks full of heavily reduced summer shoes. I found good quality sandals for all 4 grandkids, for a total of £80 (with a straightforward return option if they don't fit).
Chatting with the staff member at the till was a sad experience though - the shop is due to close at the end of August. Hence the unusually good bargains on makes like Start-Rite and Clarks.
This is the shop I used to buy shoes in for Jack and Ruth, when the branch was in the city centre. With the full foot-measuring ritual etc. I asked if the closure was due to more online shopping. "No," said the guy I spoke to, "sales of kids' shoes have just collapsed, I think people are just buying cheaper things now." Signs of the times.
