Marjorie's ramblings

Flowers and birds

…and a volcanic crater!

We had an excellent breakfast then started our day with a walk up to the rim of a large, extinct volcanic crater. We walked around the edge, enjoying views of the surrounding countryside and the centre of the crater.

Very few plants grow in this rocky terrain, but we saw thyme, sea plantain, moss campion and various grasses.

After lunch back at the cabins, we visited 3 different woodland areas. The first was fairly dense. The second and third were by a riverside. The aim was to photograph birds. They were in relatively short supply, but I did capture the redwing, in my extra, gathering grubs to feed chicks back in the nest.

The wildflowers were the stars of the day. I was excited to find one of the five moonworts that live in Iceland, snow gentians, marsh cinquefoil, Arctic cinquefoil, lingonberry, small white orchids and more. I was very tired by the end of the afternoon and Andy called me back to see this mountain avens.

We have not attempted a night shoot although the light is good.

Time for bed!
