The Wooden Balustrade

At this time of the year, as the sun warms them up, the wooden balustrades either side of the boardwalk across the “mini-moss” attract sunning darter dragonflies. I photographed both common and black darters, as long as you move slowly you can get quite close. In the main image a black darter appears to stare at its silhouette outlined on the flat wooden surface below. It is the smallest UK dragonfly.
