"Mömmur & möffins" in Akureyri
This weekend is the annual Verslunarmannahelgi in Iceland.
Verslunarmannahelgi, or Merchants’ Weekend, is the biggest travel and festival weekend of the year in Iceland. It always falls on the weekend before the first Monday of August. That Monday is a public holiday in Iceland. Originally it was just for shopkeepers, hence the name, but today everyone joins in. Many locals see this as the last camping trip of the summer. It’s a weekend full of live music, bonfires, fireworks and crowd singing.
Here in Akureyri we have a three day town festival called "Ein með öllu" ("One with everything", which is a word play on how our Icelandic hot dog is served if you ask for one with everything: On a warm, steamed bun topped with raw white onions and crispy fried onions, ketchup, sweet brown mustard called pylsu-sinnep, and remoulade, a sauce made with mayo, capers, mustard, and herbs).
Lots to see and do in the center of town and also in the local woodland Kjarnaskógur tomorrow. One of the annual events for the fifteenth year running is "Mömmur & möffins" where volunteers come together and make and sell decorated cupcakes to raise money for the maternity ward at our local hospital. Around 2.500 cupcakes are made and it's always a big success.
In other news: July 2025 was the warmest July ever in Iceland!
