Mature Fern sori
A while ago we bought a cheap microscope attachment for mobile phones. I put up a shot of some developing fern sori. I was hoping for shots of some local Greylag geese that we saw on our way back from the recycling centre after dumping yesterday's clippings. By the time we got back with the cameras they had gone.
Lacking inspiration for anything else I remembered the microscope. The obvious subject was the now developed sori. So the first shot is part of a leaf showing the now ripe sori. The extra is part of a single sorus showing the spores. The reproduction process is more complicated than in most plants. The spores are released into the air. If they land in suitable conditions they grow into a small (2-5mm) heart shaped prothalus with tiny root like structures. Eventually this releases male and female sex cells. Providing water is present the male cells swim to the female cells and fertilise them. From this grows the fern.
