Three Fingers

After the morning dampness we ventured out towards Castletownshend - first stop the Three Fingers. Theses very tall skinny standing stones dominate the landscape, seemingly skipping along the skyline. Not easy to get to and a bit of scrambling in the heather was required but well worth it - the views from up here are incredible.  Folk memory says there were originally five fingers and indeed one is lying prostrate. The other was reputed to have been taken by Madam Townshend to decorate her garden but there is no sound reference to a fifth finger in the documents, just a bit of Chinese whispery folklore going on - maybe.
We then went on to Knockdrum ringfort, towering above everything on the adjacent hill. It's been reconstructed with its sturdy stone walls but today the usually barred gate to the underground souterrain was ajar!  two of us scrambled in - not together as the space is tiny. The jury is out as to what these were originally used for - probably underground storage I reckon, like an Iron age fridge. We didn't linger!
We carried on to Castlehaven where the water was looking so enticing - no red tide and no jellies and only a father and small son rock pooling in the distance. We leapt in - blissful, but I think I did get a sting - not by a purple stinger but something that left a nettle itch. A quick visit to the holy well up the Glen where there was a downpour and then we wend our way home. Mac n cheese for supper followed by The Departed - Leo de Capriole and Matt Damon looking so young. And Jack Nicholson terrifying.

And if you missed the film first time round, you can get a sneaky look again here:Echoes of Faith
