Melancholy
They said it would rain today and by Jove it did - not heavy stair rods rain, just light rain falling incessantly from a hopeless grey sky. Just the weather to make for an even more melancholic day for a burial and funeral service. It was the day to say a farewell to the husband of Sue my erstwhile swimming companion. Michael had been ill for many months which is why she and I hadn’t been swimming together. He was a noted academic and I found myself rubbing shoulders in the local Pisky Church with the many great and good of Edinburgh University’s Engineering department and other far off foreign institutions.
Sad occasion though it was, there were also moments of humour when friends recounted their memories. As usual one learns more about the person in the aftermath of their death than during their life.
