Underfloor heating

I continue to enjoy tracking the progress on the building of the new science block at school. I was particularly keen to get some photographs this week, as I wanted to see the installation of the underfloor heating.

This is the first floor corridor in the building. The original concrete slab of the floor has first been covered with sheets of polystyrene (presumably to provide thermal insulation). The top face of the polystyrene is covered in the "graph paper" pattern you can see - and there is a small piece of the polystyrene sheet lying a little way up the picture, by the wall on the left. Then the heating pipes (transparent, flexible plastic tubing) have been laid in a zig zag pattern on top and these will subsequently be covered with the screed floor. Through the pipes will be pumped geothermally heated water (with the heating topped up by conventional boilers as required).

Looks like some colder weather coming up, and some rain as well. We might have to finally accept that summer is over.
