Entering

A recent visitor to Auckland from New York City, where he had helped develop safe cycle lanes, reported how scary he found cycling in Auckland traffic. This cyclist is well protected with reflective vest and helmet as he waits to enter Ponsonby Road from Summer Street.

On the opposite side of the road the sharp eyed may see (especially large) that the street is named Pember Reeves Street. William Pember Reeves was a lawyer and politician being Minister of Labour before then representing New Zealand in London, where he was the first High Commissioner to London for the Dominion of New Zealand.

He also wrote a history of New Zealand (Aotearoa; the Long White Cloud) from the time of the initial arrival of Maori to 1900. He was a Liberal by political affiliation, and married a prominent feminist. When in London he was on intimate friendly terms with prominent left wing figures.
