¡Viva México!

Tattered pennants left
over from Independence
Day colour the streets.

The downtown of Los Algodones, Mexico still bears the reminders of the last Día de la Independencia on September 16. It is a national holiday with parades, festivals, parties and feasts. Mexicans recall the beginning of the overthrow of the Spanish rulers in 1810.

All over Mexico, local mayors and politicians re-enact the Grito de Delores, the famous speech that denounced the tyrannies of the Spanish government on the evening of the 15th of September. The following day, September 16th, is the day for celebration. The colours of the Mexican flag(red, white, green) are everywhere.

The downtown of Los Algodones must have been a focal point for Mexican Independence Day. Sadly, I missed it all!
