Under pressure

The waterdepth on this location is 2180 m. So, the bottom pressure is 219 bar which is basically the same as 219 kg pressure per square centimeter. That's an awful lot of pressure. To show you how much this is, I grabbed my laundrybag, put four polystyrene foam coffeecups in it, and connected it to the cage of our ROV. The pressure squeezes all the air out of the polystyrene and reduces the size of the cups to approximately 20% of their original seize. Check the (apple) mouse for reference on each picture.
