We drove over the Arizona border into California to see the Picacho State Recreation Area, a rugged, scenic spot on the lower Colorado River Basin. There we were, 25 miles northwest of Yuma, Arizona overlooking Taylor Lake on the south fringe of the Colorado River channel. The first thing I notice is the man standing in the boat launch area engaged with his cell phone!

In May of this year, a wildfire raged through this area burning most of the trees. What's left of them is just charred skeletons.

I found the drive in a little daunting. The road is bumpy gravel but the landscape is very beautiful. I was surprised by the range of colours - red, rust, burgundy, grey, orange, purple,brown...
