Lozarhythm Of The Day:
Beverley - Happy New Year (1966)
Randy Newman was known only as a staff songwriter at Metric Music when Beverley Kutner got her hands on this. Randy Newman did not put out his first album until 1968, and seems not to have ever recorded this caustic tune. Beverley meanwhile had met and married John Martyn, though the marriage only lasted long enough for them to record two albums together for the Island label.

I bought this 45 on the week of its release. It was the first single to be released on the Deram label, and was her first single apart from one with a jug band called  The Levee Breakers the previous year. The thumping piano intro was provided by session maestro Nicky Hopkins, and also on hand were Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and Andy White.
