Rolling Down the River

There has been a lot of rain in the Canterbury headwaters. My son and I went to look at the Waimakariri River at the Gorge bridge. The river was flooded and muddy, but we could see by the edges that it had been a lot higher, probably this morning. Nevertheless, the river was flowing fast, and there were trees and other debris travelling at speed.

It reminds me of the big flood just a year ago. I wonder if the river reached that peak this morning.

While the nor'wester was strong and blustery I watched its effect on a field of barley. It flowed faster than the river and was a lot more turbulent. The effect was mesmerising.
