Slain's Castle

Day two of our visits to Cruden Bay. Today the sun had gone but the wind remained. We thought we were slightly better dressed for the muddy terrain, at least one of us was, I was the same as yesterday but with the addition of a pair of gloves.

The objective today was a visit to Slain's Castle just north of Cruden Bay. As can be seen we made it as far as the castle despite the mud. It is several years since I was last there, and previously I was able to wander amongst the ruins. Now it is fenced off for safety reasons, Though as can be seen several people have found a way through the fence which has been partly reduced to a level whereby it can be crossed with minimal effort.

The castle was extensively remodelled in the 1830s and had a garden laid out in the 1890s. Bram Stoker is supposed to have stayed here in 1895 and to have got the inspiration for his book "Dracula" while he was here. In 1925 the roof was removed to avoid taxes and it has subsequently fallen into disrepair. A recent scheme to restore the house and install 35 apartments has never materialised. (Perhaps Mr Trump would be interested in converting it into a five star hotel).

Judging by the size of the ruins this must have been a very impressive residence, it is a pity it was allowed to fall into disrepair. It would have had amazing views as it is right on the cliff edge, After yet another invigorating and bracing walk we adjourned to the pub in Cruden Bay.
