Long Shadows and Fins

Sports Day. Nik’s basketball game this morning and Tatum’s soccer game in the afternoon, after which H and I took a walk in the newly appearing SUNSHINE along Lake Washington in Magnuson Park near the soccer arena. It’s a big beautiful park with a huge off leash dog park (I was tempted with dog photos....)

3:20 PM for these long shadows: Myself and H and 3 more fins from
The Fin Project:From Swords into Plowshares, a 1998 sculpture by John T. Young. He says it’s a global monument to world piece and recycling... these are nuclear submarine diving plane fins (very tough steel-need no maintenance) from decommissioned US Navy attack submarines built in the 60s. They are arranged like a pod of 22 Orca whales’ dorsal fins. Magnusen Park was a former US Navy base. I do like the idea of turning recycled warships into Art. I think they show off best with these strong shadows....
His idea was for more to be created around the world as symbols for peace. Paticularly Russia. The artist’s website (above) documents one in Miami Fl. but I don’t know about more.....
