Munitions Stores

Visited this fantastic place for the first time today, even though it's literally on our doorstep.

With 30 of these large buildings scattered over a huge area it's the site of an old Naval Munitions Store which was in operation during World Wars I & II. There's loads of interesting buildings around and a definite feeling of history frozen in time with even original lamp-posts like this still standing tall. There was also a POW camp nearby (handy... lot's of explosives... chance of bombing... stick the enemy nearby!) and the original Admiralty crane is also still down on an abandoned pier by the River. It even had it's own internal railway line.

Some of the buildings now seem to be used as storage and there's evidence of livestock using them as shelter too. There doesn't seem to be any restrictions on wandering around the place either so I'll definitely be heading back here for some further investigations.

What surprised me most though is how it's lain derelict for thirty years and hasn't been snapped up and turned into another out-of-town retail park!
