S is for...

...street photography (in a more literal sense). I was thinking about the technique challenge of street/reportage photography and selected this back dated photo. Here's why...

My daughter and I traveled to London and Scotland in 2012. We were in London the weekend before the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations at Buckingham Palace. Preparations were being made for the festivities. We went early and were able to secure an envied spot to watch the changing of the guard. I could place my camera between the fence rails to take unobstructed photos. Many were not so fortunate, so as the guardsmen were leaving they held their cameras high to get a photo!

Reportage photography is using pictures to tell a story. reporting news, photo journalism, etc. I'd say the story behind this photo is the changing times where there is instant reporting. So many people have phone cameras. They can quickly upload the photos and send them to any part of the world. What a contrast to years gone by when the photographer would have to travel abroad to capture a news event and then bring the film back to be developed and published.

So smile, you may be on someone's camera!
