Another world

Oh the time is slipping by fast now. We leave early Monday morning so Alex and I had a day out together .. in some ways it was a sad day as he got the news that the Uni in the US where he had applied to do his PhD said No but said he was second on their list of choices and had hoped that the Uni would fund two but finally decided to fund one. In a way that made it harder for him to know that he was so close. He is not sure what next now but we had a chance to talk over a lunch in a spacious yet very simple 'restaurant' old Dutch style barns surround in Fort Kochi... and as we left we had this view. The workers outside. They are more often than not women. This woman had a plastic bag tied to her head. It is as if for a moment our worlds collide as we connect with a look. It seems as if we are on opposite sides of a two way mirror. The work these women do is unbelievably hard usually carrying trays of rocks on their head. And very often the money goes to men who drink it away. That is a huge problem in Kerala. So it made me think that no matter what neither of us have ever had nor would ever have it as hard as this woman not even the tiniest fraction of what she must endure.
