Golden Square

A walk along Union Street today led me towards Golden Square. This is a rather elegant square near the Music Hall. Unfortunately the elegance of the square is totally hidden by its having been transformed into a car park. There are cars everywhere there is space to put one down.

In the centre of the Square there is a statue of the Duke of Gordon. A professional soldier, he rose to the rank of General. He held various offices of state as might be expected of somebody of his rank, but does not seem to have achieved anything of particular note. He does seem to have made a sensible marriage, as his wife came with a substantial fortune, and was also an able business woman. Until 1952 the statue was in the Castlegate, when it was moved to its present position.

The sun shone on Aberdeen today, and there were hints of warmth in the air.
