Weekend Wednesday!

So, what's a girl to do when it's Weekend Wednesday (a.k.a our day off) but it's too cold and miserable to want to go out?

Get the camera out!!

This humble egg was the subject of much experimentation with window light this afternoon. Mostly I was analysing the change in quality of the light as the egg was moved closer and further away from the light source. I am reading a very interesting book at the moment about natural light food photography and about how the different qualities of natural light are used to give a different feel to images of various types of food. The book recommends that you determine first of all what message you wish to convey for the food you are photographing, and then you control the natural light to convey that message..

So with my egg - I was going for a high contrast between the light and dark parts of the egg - to accentuate the round shape, but with a soft transition between the highlights and shadows to compliment the smooth shell of the egg.

In addition.. the fabric the egg is sitting on was chosen deliberately because the colour is a similar, neutral tone as the egg, the natural fibre compliments the 'naturalness' of the egg shell and even the direction of the weave was specifically lined up to lead the eye towards the egg.

..and you thought this was just a photo of an egg :-)

Complicated stuff photography!
