Wootton Bassett

According to the forecasters, Wednesday last week was going to be the best day, and as I was free in the afternoon I resolved to go out somewhere.

I wanted to go back to the Wilts and Berks in Royal Wootton Bassett, which I had not visited since 2012, and to explore it further along than I had previously walked. From the map I could see that sections of it were watered as far as Sorell's Farm to the east of the town, and I had never been there. I parked at Templar's Firs as normal at 1500 hr and set off with my two Pentax cameras. I was expecting to see swans, possibly nesting as in previous years, but was initially disappointed. When I had passed the second footbridge (leading to the adjacent railway) I was on new territory.

This blip was taken at the end of the first watered section, and I waited for a train to pass having had a chat to a railway photographer earlier on the walk.

By the time I reached my destination I had passed a sole cygnet, which a dog walker told me was one of a family of five, including two other cygnets, and a new lock still under construction as it had no lock gates as yet. On the return route I encountered a pair of anglers on the canal who were joined by someone on a motorbike.

I got back to the car after 1700 hr, enjoying the fact that it was still light, and that everything was coming back to life.
