Our five mile world

Zulu, the heart of our home!

With temperatures of -13 degrees, frozen pipes, frozen drains and a blocked septic tank, Bill spent most of the day outdoors. He is an amazingly accomplished and modest man who can turn his hand to anything practical.

Our 9 Lohman brown hens looked particularly miserable when I went to feed them and defrost their water first thing this morning. They had fluffed up their feathers and were sitting on the snow shivering, using up all their energy in an attempt to keep from freezing. I relocated them to our large polytunnel filled with crispy green kale and other winter crops. That will keep them well fed, warm and happy till the weather improves.

Our wonderful friend and neighbour Jessica arrived with a freshly baked loaf of bread, still warm from the oven and a pot of pheasant broth for us all at lunchtime.

At the end of this busy and satisfying day we are sitting beside our woodburning stove called ZULU, grateful for the warmth of our fire and of our small community.
