Blood Root

On May 6th I took a picture of a bloom & wasn't sure what it was. This is what the bloom looks like when it's open; it's called Blood Root. The white flower is wax-like with golden stamens. Both the root and the stem contains an orange-red juice that can stain your fingers for days if you pick one of these without being careful. Blood root is also known as Indian Paint, snakebite, sweet slumber & Red Root, to name just a few of it's synonyms! It grows wild through out North America & the root has long been used by American Indians as a dye for both their bodies & clothes. It can be poisonous if ingested incorrectly, or can put you in a stupor, but I read that it can also be used for a variety of cures--everything from removing moles to helping asthma symptoms to clearing up infections! I love a plant that does it all!! Haha! Hope you all have a great weekend! :)
