Kate the Dean

The Very Reverend Kate Moorehead, Dean of St. John's Cathedral in Jacksonville, Florida, signing copies of her book at Trinity Cathedral in Portland. (SOOC.)

You've heard of Bill the Dean. Here is Kate the Dean.
She is the real deal!

Yesterday she gave a retreat on Mary Magadalene.
This morning she talked to us about "Resurrecting Easter" (the title of her new book) and then she preached.

Here are a few quotes from Kate the Dean:
• It's impossible to be both powerful like Lilith and pleasing like Eve. Women have suffered in trying to balance the role of power and the role of nurture.
• There's a difference between love and attachment. That's why Jesus told Mary Magdalene, 'Don't hold on to me.'
• If you want to be close to Jesus, you have to show up and spend time.
• Your own pain can be the source of your greatest ministry.
• You can't minister until you've faced your own demons.
• To experience resurrection you must face the darkness and wait for Jesus to come.
• Don't tell me you can't rest. Jesus rose from the dead and then he took the Sabbath off.
• Jesus appeared only to those who loved him. The Resurrection is visible only to those who love the Lord.
• To see the Resurrection, wake up! Look again! Open the eyes of your perspective!
• St. Peter shows us the best lessons in life happen when we fail.
• Listening is the most powerful change agent.
• The greatest sin in America today is busyness that keeps our minds spinning so there's no room for God.
• The skepticism and seeking of Doubting Thomas are his devotion. Jesus appeared with scars as a sign of authenticity. Our identity is shaped by our scars.
• Pentecost (the coming of the Holy Spirit) is equal in holiness to Christmas and Easter.

I'm not sure I agree a hundred percent with all of the above, but Kate's presentation was a breath of fresh air and provided lots of food for thought. I hope Bill the Dean brings Kate the Dean back soon!
