Bowness on Windermere

A surprisingly good journey to the Lake District. Left Maidstone at 9.40 and arrived here at just after 4.30 with a stop for lunch around Birmingham. For a Friday the traffic quite behaved itself only proving a little annoying on the M1 and M6 between junctions 10a and 13. I was expecting much worse.

We opened the door of our holiday accommodation with trepidation, as you always do on these occasions. We knew it didn't look much from the outside but it is the inside that matters. I'm happy to report that the place is good. A little parsimonious with any welcoming provisions. Perhaps we've become used to owners leaving a pint of milk, some bread and the like. But not this time. Only one loo roll that we can find at the moment. That's not going to go very far between 3 is it?

We moved all the stuff from the car into the house, had a cup of tea then set off for the supermarket to buy supplies for the week. In the past we've bought food with us, or had it delivered by Mr Tesco, but this time we're travelling light and doing the shopping when we arrive.

Supper was pizza and salad with a drop of wine. All of which went down very well, leaving just enough time to wander down the hill to Lake Windermere to catch the last of the evening light - which this shot is one of many of a quite spectacular sight. Clear, calm and mild. A lovely early summer evening
