Brighter than the day

The forecasters were (sadly) right today: it has drizzled, mizzled and rained. We sat it out this morning after a walk for a paper but ventured out after lunch to Eyam. I'm sure the weather wasn't any better there the last time we visited but that was in October and it would have been more than appropriate to be wearing a thermal top, wooly hat and kagoule. Not so appropriate in practically June but definitely necessary. Unlike our last visit, Eyam Hall is now open to visitors having been in the same family for eleven-ish generations and now leased to the National Trust. The portraiture was particularly interesting and the needlework on bed covers which were as old as the house itself.

We then wandered up to the church, past the plague cottages with the information boards in their front gardens detailing who died when. This stained glass window commemorating the story of the village putting themselves into quarantine is really effective and certainly more colourful than the rest of the greyest of days.
