Dehumidifiers work, really well when theres a lot of moisture around. When there was some spare time to do a bit of research between my shift finishing and the shops opening, some surprising facts came to light about dehumidifiers, around half of NZ houses own one and a lot of those are ineffective. They operate by drawing air through a frozen filterwhich cools the air further and removes the moisture, it makes sense because that how clouds and rain work. Well kind of like that.

It turns out dehumidifiers are ineffective because many of them do not work below 15 celcius, a fact that is very important in winter. Central heating is sparse here and double glazing is a relatively new thing! Hard to believe when I grew up with double glazed houses everywhere, from privately owned to council rented.

The dehumidifier we bought was expensive by comparison to others but it works from zero, a must in these conditions. On the face of it, it is much more expensive to run but compared to buying cold and flu things and visits to the doctor, it works out at a pretty reasonable monthly cost.
