Rye

is growing on the compost heap much better than it would on the fields of course. It can be quite effective in discouraging other plants like rye grass even.

A varied day of many phone calls and some interesting emails today. MF cooked us dinner which was great. J is back from Warsaw. RG called and will visit tomorrow.

Rye is a basic crop in Poland since it is used for normal bread, fermented for soup and sometimes converted into something strong. Personally I find the low boiling point liquid is usually pretty awful although once I had a small quantity which was described by a long extinct taxi driver as 'like an angel had ... on my heart'. He glossed over what the angel did with the axe in the morning with a wry smile.
