HMS President: Dazzle Camouflage

More dazzling in large ("L").
Alternative (with more context) here.

This is the HMS President in her new dazzle camouflage! She was a dazzle ship in WW1, and has had a new design painted on her to mark the centenary of the war (more info here). This new take on the camouflage was designed by Tobias Rehberger.

The idea with dazzle camouflage is not to make the ship invisible, but to make it hard to target by breaking up its shape so making it very difficult for adversaries to work out the size and distance of the ship.

I visited the HMS President several times in my gap year when working (briefly) for a catering company; she looked very different back then, and seeing her usually brought back rather dreary memories, so I was rather pleased to see her looking so different and lively as I walked along the Southbank this afternoon.
