Mum caught an early train back to York this morning which left me wandering through town at prime commuter time. Princes Street Gardens was quiet when I arrived, and soon started filling with tourists waiting for the first city tours, or rides on the ferris wheel to start.

Edinburgh is hoaching* with tourists here for the start of the Edinburgh Festivals. The Fringe Festival is underway as is the Arts Festival, the Book Festival and Edinburgh International Festival which means that most of the buildings in the city are some kind of festival venue or another. This is The Scott Monument, apparently it's the largest monument to a writer anywhere in the world. It isn't a festival venue, but you can pay to climb 287 steps to the top via a spiral staircase and then 287 steps back down again.

*hoaching (adj.) Be full or swarming with. The place is hoaching with wee girls in pink leotards and tutus (oxforddictionaries.com)
