Sunshine, Ocean, Beaches, and Kites

This morning, after we had a few deliciously strong cups of coffee, Rich and I took a leisurely walk down the long wooden boardwalk that runs along the beach. (Note: one feature I really appreciated about the design of this boardwalk was that there was a separate paved trail alongside it just for bicycles. With separation of bikes and pedestrians, a safer experience was enjoyed by all.)

The morning began with thick, dense fog which quickly burned off leaving behind unobstructed views of brilliant blue sky and roaring white surf. As we continued along the boardwalk, we could see kites far off in the distance. We later learned that today was the opening day of the Washington State International Kite Festival, a week-long festival that takes place every year around the third week of August in Long Beach, WA.

As we got closer to the event we found ourselves facing (as Rich called it) a RIOT of kites! Kites of all shapes and sizes, some so long, they appeared to fade off into the heavens. One of the announcers stated that there were at least 2000 kites present today (and this was still early in the morning).

It was a fun and colorful ending to a rejuvenating extended-weekend, full with Pacific Northwest sights and sounds.

Fly a kite!
