Marjorie's ramblings

Today's great tale!!

Stick with me, today's blip comes from a great day with a great tale at the very end.

Lil and I did the recce for "Skywalking" which is one of our festival walks. We walked from Once Brewed to Steel Rigg and then west along Hadrian's Wall trail. It was fairly busy and we met lovely people.

The engaged couple who are marrying on Aug 1st 2015
The archaeologist parents with son, about 9, who was enjoying the walk but not too interested in the Romans!
The man on his own, who came by train from the south, and may return for the festival.
The group of 5 young folk who were pleased to have recommendations for camping tonight.
The two women in ordinary shoes who had made it to the trig point on Winshield Crags.

Later in our walk we encountered a real problem with the route and ended up retreating from a wood where the footpath disappeared into nothing, but the fences were high and covered in barbed wire......

On our drive home, we saw 2 very tired looking walkers trying to hitch a lift on the Military Road. Lil picked them up. They are doing Hadrian's Wall "on a shoestring" with no proper map and, to be honest, not much idea of the geography. They had walked miles today but not progressed far.

We brought them here and I made tea and provided biscuits. There were lots of laughs and they even agreed to be models to advertise the printed programmes. Lil and Mum are in the middle. Then Lil dropped them off at Wall village green where free camping is allowed for one night only. I do hope they make it to Newcastle - not tomorrow as they hoped - and then back to Ipswich. It was such fun meeting them.

What a day. Phew!
