Swimming Against The Tide

Illuminated Building

Last night we went to the Barbican Centre in London to hear the LSO perform an all-Beethoven concert (Egmont Overture, Piano Concerto No.2, Symphony No.6). It was an excellent evening out, and there were many possible blips.

Just before the concert we ventured out to search for a little food to keep us sustained through the concert, and I took this picture of a building, which was rather splendidly lit up. I love these city buildings - other people often look longingly at pictures of countryside, but my heart is always in the urban environment.

I often wonder what is going on in these places in the early evening. Office workers finishing off the last bit of work? Stressed executives trying to balance the books? A gathering of people having a drink to celebrate a colleague's birthday? Somebody using the fast work internet connection after office hours? A music fan waiting at work before going to hear some Beethoven? A cleaner, wearily mopping the floors? Two colleagues, maybe one or both of them married, waiting for everyone else to go home so they can tear each other's clothes off and make mad passionate love?
