A Foggy and Cool Morning

Dear Diary,

Only 46 degrees this morning and the yard is in a fog. I have been dividing iris the last two days and now I am in a panic about getting the other perennials divided to fill in around the potting shed. There is always a day in September when you realize time is running out and you feel a rush of panic. Frost and snow can come so early here in Maine.

I think the insects and animals must feel it too. There is a great deal of "toing and froing" by the squirrels and chipmunks. Oh, there will be a few more warm days ahead yet but it has finally sunk in that summer is on the wane and you must be sure everything is ready to be tucked in for winter, including yourself. Time to schedule the furnace cleaning and tune up on the generator....

“What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness.”
― John Steinbeck, Travels with Charley: In Search of America
