A door within a door.

This is the doorway below the tower at the west end of the St Thomas Church Mellor. Even to an untrained eye you can see the difference in stonework from the wall, which has smaller stones, to the infilled archway which has used larger more uniform stone. Apparently this is called a perpendicular doorway and the tower is from the 15th Century according to the church website. The church is in a commanding high position which according to recent archaeological discoveries has been occupied since the Bronze Age. I will certainly be going back to investigate the area further as there are many footpaths across the surrounding farmland including a long distance walk The Cown Edge Way.
