When I was his age MANY moons ago, in fact in a previous century!!, there were two main types of beard that lads I knew grew.
The impenetrable hedgerow (probably complete with flora and fauna) and the whiskery wizard to accompany the must carry copy of Lord of the Rings.

Herman Melville in his 1850 book White Jacket describes beards in 25 ways including; suburbs of the chin, nodding harvests and thrice-noble beards.

Tim's a noble beard without doubt.
