Activity Day

Action packed day, or more precisely - activity packed day, not a lot of sleep had by me due to sleeping patterns being confused and Nomi struggled after night shift. Dad tried to go fishing but the boat had left early then I reluctantly got up and had bread for breakfast.

Activity number one was to visit some Kiwi at the bird park, caught feeding time for the nocturnal beasts, artificial red lighting in the enclosure tricks the little guys into thinking it is night time so they come out during the daytime.

After that, we jumped on the little bus to take us through Skippers Canyon to the Jet Boat, yes activity 2 involved getting very wet in a very fast boat rushing through the canyon floor at up to 80 kph (50 mph). Tremendous fun was had by everyone on the bus because not only was the jet boat brilliant, the drive there is scary too! Winding along an old mining road on the cliff edge is spectacular. Often a sheer drop straight to the canyon floor can be seen when you peer downwards from the window. The guide points out some Lord of the Rings movie locations and fills you in on the gold mining history of the area. Once the fun stuff is done, you get a quick stop to see an old bungy site, built in 1994 and at the time it was the worlds highest commercial bungy. since then much bigger ones have opened and one bigger one in Queenstown finished off this site in 2002.

The jet boat people use Massey Ferguson tractors to dip their boats and office into the water, here we are posing beside one one!

Returning to town, Dad checked in and I had a nap before dinner at Jervois Steak House. One of our favorite places to eat, I booked last night and ordered the 18 hour slow cooked steak - the house signature. It tasted beautiful but wasn't as tender as expected, no complaints from me though. Similar story with the Wagyu steak ordered for sharing at the table. That rounded off the third activity of the day, now it is time for an early night and hope we can think of something to match the brilliance of the last few days.
