National Day Oman

Muscat is in celebratory mode today. We started off in the office with some soup and our Omani colleagues proudly singing their national anthem. Everyone was in a happy mood.

The main way of celebrating seems to involve incredibly noisy cars parading around the opera house just outside. It also seems to involve finding out how many people (young men) who can hang out of a 4x4 which is travelling at some speed. I am also gaining an appreciation of diverse the noise of car horns are. I think some car drivers are finding out how long their horn can go before the car is drained of power.

In contrast to the raucous noises on the streets, some young people had shaped the name of the Sultan on the sand and lit some candles. It was a thoughtful gesture and a pretty sight.
