Cosmic Buddha

We are staying in the holy Buddhist retreat of Koyasan today, just outside Osaka.

This is the 45 metre high Konpon daito 'the great fundamental pagoda' which contains a statue of the Dainichi Nyorai, or the 'cosmic Buddha'.

The original was built in 876 AD but has been rebuilt multiple times after burning down after thunderstorms, the latest version was completed in 1937.

The colours were very striking against the blue December skies.
