The Old Chapel

John Wesley preached at Stroud, which has a long history of Nonconformism. In 1876, the Methodist congregation had outgrown their polygonal chapel in Stroud's Acre Street, and a new large stone chapel in the classical tradition was built to house them in nearby Castle street. In 1971, the regular Sunday congregation numbered 50. The Salvation Army acquired the former Methodist chapel in Acre Street in 1971, and it is still in use as a place of meeting and worship.

I moved to Stroud in 1994, and my second home was in Acre Street, adjacent to the two chapels I have mentioned. By this time, the one in Castle Street was 'the Old Chapel' and had been converted into flats. As such, I have never been inside, though I've been in the building on the right, whose gable end you can just see. That is the former Blackboys school, which is now also flats, but which once housed a part of Stroud College of Art. The school signposted on the left is still a school but the building is not in shot.

None of this is what you'd call highly relevant to my day, but it just goes to show that it may be possible to take photos on the way to work, if I leave slightly earlier every day! Still have not reached my target of leaving the house at 7.50 am!

Went to the supermarket at lunchtime, passing by the pond and park in bright sunlight, but there is not enough time to shop and blip and eat lunch on the way back!
The cygnets looked happy, though, and well fed. Seven working days to go until the end of term....
